The Emu Wars of 1922
Emus are large, flightless birds that originate from Australia. For years, they were deemed a protected species in the country; however, in 1922, the Australian government relabeled them as vermin due to the damage the birds were causing to essential Australian crops, especially wheat. Due to their size and strength, emus were breaking into farmers’ properties and eating or trampling their crops. Furthermore, in 1932, an unprecedented number of emus migrated to Western Australia, resulting in widespread crop destruction across the region. So, in November of that year, the Australian government ordered three Royal Australian Artillery soldiers to control the growing number of emus that were populating Australian farms. However, over the course of two months, only 1,000 of the roughly 20,000 emus were killed, labelling this mission as a failed military operation. However, this Joint Crisis Committee starts in November, meaning delegates will get to rewrite the Emu War. One cabinet will serve as the members of the Australian Government that ordered the mission, the members of the Royal Australian Artillery that participated in the conflict, and the farmers who were impacted by the emus’ presence. The other cabinet will be composed of the emus themselves. Delegates will be assigned backgrounds for their characters, and each will hold a position in the Emu Army. The ultimate question is, who will win the Great Emu War of 1932, and what will be the cost of their victory?
